Making Travel Fun

May 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Pebbles and Fred Flinstone PezThe child within me always likes to keep things fun and interesting - especially when I’m traveling. Last year on my trip to Las Vegas for the Blogworld Expo , I brought with me my little Pebbles Pez. It was given to me by Know More Media and since the company was going to be at Blogworld, I figured it would be fun to bring Pebbles and reunite her with her dad, Fred Flintstone ;)

And I’m not the only one who likes to make traveling fun! My friend always travels with her little Squirtle and takes pictures of him with all kinds of people. Here’s a video of Squirtle having an adventure in Paris, France…

What do you do to make traveling fun?

Singapore Airlines A380 Outshines the Competition

May 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Many of the big-name airlines are coming out with new and improved ways to provide better service for customers.  Well, this better service isn’t so much the case for Coach Class customers as it is for Business and First Class customers.

I used to think that Virgin Airways was cool to have Upper Class seats that turned into lie-flat beds.  Don’t get me wrong, that’s still a nice touch, but I think that Singapore Airlines has them beat with their lavish suites on the A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft.  Check out a review of it at the Firstclass Travel Blogs.

The Travel Challenge: Find a Room in Los Angeles Around $50

May 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Standing TallBeing the spontaneous person that I am, I actually dread all the planning involved in taking a trip…Well, unless it’s a trip to a dreamy place that l have never been to before - like Paris or Italy, for instance. My next trip is next week and I’m heading to L.A. for a beauty blog summit. This kind of trip would be exciting for people who aren’t from California, however, for me, it’s just another trip. Nevertheless, I look forward to just getting out and meeting new people.

I already have the train ticket, but the challenge for me today was to find a motel/hotel in the $50 range. I don’t believe in paying more for a place that I’m not going to spend any time in except to sleep at night! Just when I was about to give up, I came across the LAX Westfield Inn which offers a $50 rate with no increase on Friday or Saturday nights. Sweet!

My trip is next Thursday, so stay tuned next week as I will be posting a review of the property!

Tuesdays Will Be “Quick Travel Tip” Day

May 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Travel Tips Graphic by DryIcons.comI’ve decided to make Tuesday the day that I offer a quick travel tip. My first tip is…

Make your luggage stand out in the crowd!

I used to travel with a black suitcase and would often get confused when it was time to pick up my suitcase at the luggage carousel. It seems like 80% of people have black suitcases! Well, I decided to put an end to all that confusion by buying a multi-colored suitcase that can’t be missed…

Another thing you could do is attach a colored handkerchief to your suitcase handle.

Have a travel tip to share? Email your tip to: travelwriter {at} salondemaria {dot} info and I’ll include it in an upcoming Tuesday! Make sure to subscribe or bookmark this blog so you don’t miss out on all these travel tips!

Montserrat: A Video Essay

May 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Islands Magazine WebsiteDo you dream of exotic and relaxing vacations on remote islands? I certainly do! I’ve actually dream about owning my very own island one day…

So as I was browsing the Corporate Treat blog today, I discovered the Islands magazine website and their Editor Blogs. One of the editors put together this video about Jad Davenport’s video essay on Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean Sea…

I’ve actually experienced a volcano eruption when I lived in the Philippines back in 1991. If I were to ever own an island, I’m going to make sure that there aren’t any volcanoes on it!

Tips For the San Diego Tourist

May 4th, 2008 · No Comments

San Diego is a gorgeous city that attracts thousands of tourists a year. People come for the weather, to hang out at the beach, or visit one of the many attractions that make San Diego “America’s Finest City”. Here are a few tips to help you when visiting this city…

  • When traveling on public transportation, make sure to carry exact change at all times. Bus drivers don’t give change. However, the exception is if you’re traveling on the trolley (San Diego’s version of the metro train). The trolley stations have these red machines that dispense tickets and give change. You can also purchase day passes at these machines if you plan on using public transportation often. The tickets purchased at the trolley stations can be used on the buses as well.

  • If you’re only planning a short weekend getaway, the best area to stay in is downtown San Diego because you’ll be close to many areas of interest. Downtown San Diego is home to the famous Gaslamp Quarter which houses numerous restaurants and boutiques that cater to tourists and the growing population of residents. Then there’s Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo which are a hop, skip, and a jump away from the heart of downtown. Downtown is also just a short 15 minute drive to Mission Beach which is the most popular tourist beach in San Diego.
  • If you decide to rent a car to get around San Diego, make sure to bring a credit card with you if rent from any of the car rental companies in the downtown area. The only time they will accept debit cards is if you have a round trip airline ticket. The reason for this is because San Diego is so close to Mexico and there have been many incidents where people take cars over the border and never come back.

Have you ever visited San Diego? Have a tip to share? Leave a comment!

Greece: A Hot European Destination

May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Oia, Greece flickr photo by Jon RawlinsonTripAdvisor, an internet travel advisory service, recently conducted a survey in which the Greek island of Rhodes was voted the #1 top European location. Even with the economy the way it is here in the U.S., Europe is still a hot spot for travelers.

Greece is one of those places that is so full of history and definitely at the top of my list of places to visit in the world. I’m fascinated with the architecture of the homes built there and I can just imagine what a sight those ancient ruins would be.

For more about traveling in Greece, I recommend reading the Greece Travel Blog.

May 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

A View From the PlaneWelcome, fellow travelers! You’re about to embark on a journey with me into the world of the unknown. I’m excited to be starting a travel blog as I’ve been wanting to be a travel writer for quite some time now. One of my goals for 2008 was to do more traveling and so far I haven’t quite reached it, so this blog will simply reaffirm my commitment to that goal.

Here at Traveltoday I will be covering all types of travel-related news and resources. Of course, I will also be posting my own travel experiences within the U.S. and abroad. Whether traveling on business or pleasure, this blog will cover it all. I also have a passion for photography, so expect to see many pictures here as well!

And so the journey begins…
